Castor oil for erectile dysfunction: what you need to know
Rubbing castor oil on the penis, or drinking it, is a popular online tip for stronger erections and even size. Here is what is known about it.
In short: There is no scientific evidence that castor oil improves erections, sexual stamina or penis size, whether rubbed on the skin or swallowed. Taken by mouth it is a strong laxative that can cause cramps and dehydration. On the skin it is usually safe but may irritate sensitive genital skin. Better-supported natural options focus on blood flow, the pelvic floor and lifestyle.
Why men try castor oil
Castor oil has a long history as a folk remedy for skin and joints. Online, it is now promoted as a massage oil that increases blood flow to the penis. The idea sounds logical, but an oil on the skin does not reach the deep arteries that control erections.
What the evidence says
We are not aware of any human study showing castor oil improves erectile dysfunction or penis size. Massage itself can feel pleasant and relaxing, which may help arousal, but any oil would do the same.
Risks of drinking castor oil
- Strong laxative effect, cramping and diarrhoea
- Dehydration and loss of minerals with repeated use
- Not suitable with some bowel conditions
Risks of using it on the penis
- Skin irritation or allergic reaction on thin genital skin
- It can damage latex condoms, increasing the risk of breakage
- Using it inside the urethra is unsafe
If you have redness, itching or swelling, stop using it. See itchy penis causes.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
