Testosterone
Does sex increase testosterone?
It is a popular claim online. So does sex increase testosterone, and does ejaculating lower it? The real effects are smaller than most people think.
In short: Sexual activity and anticipation can cause small, short-term rises in testosterone, but they do not meaningfully raise long-term levels. Ejaculation does not drain testosterone. Abstaining may cause a small temporary peak around day seven in one study, but levels return to baseline. Sleep, body fat, exercise and stress have far bigger effects.
What the research shows
- Small studies show testosterone may rise slightly before and during sexual activity
- Levels return to normal soon after
- Regular sexual activity is associated with general wellbeing, but not proven to raise baseline testosterone
Does ejaculation lower testosterone?
No meaningful long-term effect has been shown. See does masturbation lower testosterone.
What about NoFap and abstinence?
One small study found a temporary peak in testosterone around the seventh day of abstinence, after which levels returned to baseline. Read semen retention benefits.
