Oysters benefits for men: zinc, testosterone and the aphrodisiac myth
Oysters are famous as an aphrodisiac. Is there any truth to it? Here are the real oysters benefits for men, and what the science says about their reputation.
In short: Oysters are the richest natural source of zinc, a mineral essential for testosterone production and healthy sperm. In men who are low in zinc, eating zinc-rich foods can support hormones and fertility. There is no good evidence that oysters directly increase desire. Raw oysters carry a risk of food poisoning.
Why oysters have a sexy reputation
The legend goes back centuries, helped by famous lovers who reportedly ate dozens a day. Part of the reputation may come from their zinc content and their luxury image.
What is in oysters?
A small serving of oysters provides several times the daily zinc requirement, plus vitamin B12, selenium, iron, omega-3 fats and protein.
Benefits for men
Zinc for testosterone
Zinc is needed to make testosterone. Men who are deficient can have lower levels, which improve when zinc intake is corrected. See zinc benefits for men sexually.
Sperm health
Zinc and selenium are concentrated in semen and support sperm production. See how to increase sperm motility.
Heart health
Omega-3 fats support blood vessels. See omega-3 benefits for men.
Do oysters work as an aphrodisiac?
There is no good human evidence that oysters directly increase libido. One often-quoted study found compounds in shellfish raised hormones in rats, but this has not been shown in men. Any benefit likely comes from correcting low zinc.
Safety
- Raw oysters can carry bacteria and viruses, including Vibrio and norovirus. Men with liver disease, diabetes or weakened immunity should eat them cooked.
- Shellfish allergy can be severe.
- Regular large servings can provide too much zinc; the upper limit is 40 mg a day from all sources.
Other zinc-rich foods
If oysters are not for you, try red meat, chicken, pumpkin seeds, cashews, chickpeas and dairy. See pumpkin seeds benefits for men.
The bigger picture
Zinc is one piece of the puzzle. Sleep, weight, exercise and stress matter more for testosterone. See how to increase testosterone naturally. A naturopath can review your diet and build a natural plan.
