Saw palmetto benefits for men: prostate, hair and hormones
Saw palmetto is one of the most popular supplements for men over 40, mainly for the prostate. Here is an honest look at saw palmetto benefits for men, including what the largest trials found.
In short: Saw palmetto has been widely used for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. However, large, well-designed trials found it was no better than placebo for urinary symptoms, even at high doses. Small studies suggest a possible benefit for hair loss. It is generally well tolerated, but urinary symptoms should always be checked first.
What is saw palmetto?
Saw palmetto (*Serenoa repens*) is a palm native to the south-eastern United States. Extracts from its berries are sold for prostate health, hair loss and as a “testosterone support” supplement.
What the research shows
Enlarged prostate (BPH)
Earlier, smaller studies suggested saw palmetto improved urinary flow and night-time urination. However, two large, high-quality US trials found it was no more effective than placebo for urinary symptoms, even when the dose was tripled. A major review reached the same conclusion. See enlarged prostate natural remedies.
Hair loss
Saw palmetto may weakly block the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, which drives male pattern hair loss. A few small studies suggest modest benefit, but evidence is limited. See testosterone and hair loss.
Testosterone and libido
There is no good evidence that saw palmetto raises testosterone or improves libido. Some men report reduced libido, possibly because of its effect on DHT.
Side effects
- Usually mild: stomach upset, headache or dizziness.
- It may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners.
- Because it may affect hormones, it is not suitable for everyone.
Get urinary symptoms checked first
Frequent urination, a weak stream, getting up at night or difficulty emptying the bladder can have several causes, including infection, diabetes and, less commonly, prostate cancer. An appropriately registered medical professional can examine you and arrange tests. See frequent urination in men and prostate health symptoms men shouldn’t ignore.
Natural approaches with better support
- Reduce evening fluids, caffeine and alcohol.
- Stay active and maintain a healthy weight.
- Eat plenty of vegetables and include pumpkin seeds. See pumpkin seeds benefits for men.
- Double voiding: wait a moment after urinating, then try again.
A naturopath can help you build a natural plan for prostate comfort alongside medical assessment.
