In short: Healthy semen is usually white, grey or slightly yellowish. Clear, watery semen often follows frequent ejaculation. Yellow semen can come from urine traces, diet or longer gaps between ejaculation, but persistent yellow-green semen with symptoms may mean infection. Red, pink or brown semen indicates blood and should be checked.

Normal semen colour

Semen is typically white to grey, sometimes slightly yellow, and thick or jelly-like at first before becoming more liquid within 15 to 30 minutes.

What different colours may mean

White or grey

Normal and healthy.

Clear or watery

Often seen after frequent ejaculation, when there is less time to build up sperm and fluid. Persistent watery semen may suggest low sperm count. See watery sperm causes.

Yellow

Can be caused by:

  • Traces of urine in the urethra
  • Longer gaps between ejaculations
  • Certain foods, supplements or vitamins
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes too), which needs medical assessment

Yellow-green

Can indicate infection, such as prostatitis or a sexually transmitted infection, especially with a smell, pain or discharge.

Red, pink or brown

Indicates blood in the semen (haematospermia). See blood in semen.

When to get checked

See an appropriately registered medical professional if:

  • Semen is red, pink or brown more than once
  • It is yellow-green or has a bad smell
  • You have pain, burning, fever or discharge
  • Your skin or eyes are yellow
  • You are trying for a baby and semen is consistently watery

Supporting healthy semen

  • Stay hydrated.
  • Eat an antioxidant-rich diet. See walnuts benefits for men.
  • Limit alcohol and do not smoke.
  • Practise safer sex.
