Causes of ED
Steroids and erectile dysfunction: how gym steroids affect your sex life
Anabolic steroids are widely used in gyms, often without understanding the effect on hormones. The link between steroids and erectile dysfunction is real, and the effects can last after you stop.
In short: Anabolic steroids signal the brain to stop producing your own testosterone. This can shrink the testicles, lower sperm count and, especially after stopping a cycle, cause low testosterone, low drive and erectile dysfunction that may last for months. Steroids also raise heart and liver risks and can cause breast tissue growth.
How steroids affect your hormones
When you take external testosterone or other anabolic steroids, your brain senses high levels and shuts down signals (LH and FSH) to the testes. Your own testosterone production and sperm production fall.
Effects on sexual health
During use
Some men notice higher drive, while others experience erection problems, especially as some testosterone converts to oestrogen. See high estrogen in men.
After stopping
Natural production can take months, sometimes longer, to recover. This can cause:
- Very low drive
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low mood and fatigue
- Loss of muscle
Fertility
Steroids can cause very low or absent sperm counts. Recovery can take months to years. See signs of male infertility.
Testicle shrinkage
Testicles shrink because they are not being stimulated.
Breast growth
See gynecomastia causes.
Other health risks
- High blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart enlargement
- Liver damage (especially with oral steroids)
- Acne and hair loss. See testosterone and hair loss.
- Mood swings, aggression and depression
- Infections from shared needles
- Counterfeit or contaminated products
If you have used steroids
- Do not restart steroids to “fix” low drive after a cycle.
- See an appropriately registered medical professional for assessment and hormone tests, especially if symptoms last more than a few months.
- Support recovery with sleep, nutrition, stress management and gradual, sensible training.
