Premature ejaculation

Yoga for premature ejaculation: a natural way to build control

Yoga combines breathing, pelvic floor awareness and relaxation, which are three things that matter for ejaculation control. Yoga for premature ejaculation has even been studied in a clinical trial.

In short: A study from India found that men with premature ejaculation who practised yoga for 12 weeks improved their time to ejaculation as much as men taking a medicine. Yoga helps by training the pelvic floor, reducing anxiety and improving body awareness. A short daily routine of breathing and a few key poses is a practical start.

What the research found

In a 2007 study, men with PE practised a set of yoga postures daily for 12 weeks. All of them reported improvement in ejaculation control. Another group took fluoxetine and improved by a similar amount. The study was small, but the result is encouraging for a natural approach.

Why yoga helps

  • Strengthens and relaxes the pelvic floor
  • Slows breathing and calms the nervous system
  • Reduces anxiety and improves sleep
  • Builds awareness of tension and arousal in the body

A 15-minute routine

1. Belly breathing (3 minutes)

Sit or lie down and breathe slowly into your belly. See breathing techniques to last longer in bed.

2. Mula bandha (2 minutes)

Gently lift the pelvic floor on the out-breath and release on the in-breath. This is similar to kegels.

3. Bridge pose (2 minutes)

Lie on your back, knees bent, and lift the hips, squeezing the buttocks and pelvic floor. Hold for 5 breaths, repeat three times.

4. Cobra pose (2 minutes)

Lie face down and gently lift the chest, opening the hips and front of the pelvis.

5. Butterfly pose (2 minutes)

Sit with the soles of the feet together and let the knees fall outwards to relax the hips and groin.

6. Child’s pose (2 minutes)

Kneel and fold forward, relaxing the pelvic floor completely.

7. Rest (2 minutes)

Lie flat, breathing slowly.

Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.

  1. Do you usually ejaculate sooner than you or your partner would like?
  2. Has this always been the case, or did it start recently?
  3. Do you feel you have little or no control over when you ejaculate?
  4. Is it causing stress, avoidance or tension in your relationship?
  5. Do you also have trouble getting or keeping an erection?

A yes to questions one, three or four suggests a consultation would help. Problems that started recently, or that come with erection difficulties, are worth discussing early, because the cause often guides the most effective natural plan.
