Penile health
Penis smell: common causes and simple fixes
A slight musky smell is normal, especially after a long day or exercise. A strong or unusual penis smell is usually caused by something simple, but sometimes it signals an infection.
In short: The most common causes of penis odour are sweat, a build-up of smegma under the foreskin, balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis), thrush, urinary tract infections and some sexually transmitted infections. Daily gentle washing with warm water, drying well and wearing breathable underwear solves most cases. Get checked if you have discharge, pain, sores or swelling.
Common causes
Sweat
The groin is warm and has many sweat glands. Bacteria break down sweat and create odour.
Smegma
A natural mix of skin cells, oils and moisture that collects under the foreskin. If not washed away it can smell strong and look white and cheesy.
Balanitis
Inflammation of the head of the penis, often in uncircumcised men, causing redness, soreness and odour. See balanitis.
Thrush
A yeast infection that can cause itching, white patches and a yeasty smell, more common in men with diabetes.
Urinary tract infection
Can cause cloudy, strong-smelling urine and burning. Read UTI in men.
Sexually transmitted infections
Some STIs cause discharge with an unpleasant smell. See STI symptoms in men.
Simple hygiene steps
- Wash daily with warm water
- If uncircumcised, gently pull back the foreskin and rinse underneath
- Use mild, unscented soap on the shaft only, not strong soap on the head
- Dry well before dressing
- Wear breathable cotton underwear and change it daily
- Shower after exercise
Our penile hygiene tips cover more.
What to avoid
- Scented soaps, sprays and wipes on the penis
- Over-washing, which can irritate the skin
- Tight synthetic underwear
When to get checked
See an appropriately registered medical professional if you have:
- Discharge from the penis
- Pain, burning or blood when urinating
- Sores, blisters or a rash
- Swelling or difficulty pulling back the foreskin
- Fever
