Itchy testicles: common causes and simple relief
Itchy testicles are common, especially in hot weather. Most causes are easy to treat once you know what is behind the itch.
In short: Itching of the scrotum is usually caused by sweat and friction, fungal infection (jock itch), dry skin, irritation from soaps or shaving, eczema or psoriasis. Less commonly it is caused by pubic lice, scabies or genital herpes. Keeping the area clean and dry, wearing breathable underwear and using the right treatment for the cause usually brings relief.
Common causes
Sweat and friction
Heat and tight clothing trap moisture.
Jock itch
A fungal infection causing an itchy red rash in the groin. See jock itch in men.
Dry skin
Hot showers and harsh soaps strip moisture.
Shaving irritation
Razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Eczema or psoriasis
Red, scaly or thickened patches.
Less common causes
Pubic lice
Intense itching, often worse at night; tiny lice or eggs may be visible.
Scabies
Very itchy rash, worse at night, often also on hands and wrists.
Genital herpes
Tingling and itching before small blisters appear.
See STI symptoms in men.
