Jock itch in men: how to treat and prevent it
An itchy, red rash in the groin is common, especially in South Africa’s hot summers. Most of the time it is jock itch, a fungal infection that clears with simple treatment.
In short: Jock itch, or tinea cruris, is a fungal skin infection of the groin and inner thighs. It causes an itchy, red, ring-shaped rash with a raised edge, usually sparing the penis and scrotum. It thrives in warm, moist conditions. Keeping the area clean and dry and using an over-the-counter antifungal cream usually clears it within one to three weeks.
Signs of jock itch
- Itchy, red or brown rash in the groin folds and inner thighs
- A raised, scaly edge with clearer skin in the middle
- Burning or stinging
- Usually does not affect the penis or scrotum
What causes it?
The same fungi that cause athlete’s foot. They spread through skin contact, shared towels, gym clothes and from your own feet.
Who gets it?
- Men who sweat a lot or exercise often
- Men who wear tight underwear or gym clothes for long periods
- Men with diabetes or excess weight
- Men with athlete’s foot
How to treat it
- Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream, such as clotrimazole or terbinafine, as directed
- Continue for one to two weeks after the rash clears
- Keep the area clean and dry
- Wash towels and underwear in hot water
- Treat athlete’s foot at the same time, and put socks on before underwear
How to prevent it
- Shower after exercise and dry the groin well
- Wear loose cotton underwear and change daily
- Do not share towels
- Keep gym kit clean and dry
When it might be something else
- A rash on the penis or scrotum may be thrush or balanitis
- Blisters or sores may be herpes; see STI symptoms in men
- A spreading red, warm rash with fever may be a bacterial infection
