In short: Dribbling after urination, also called after-dribble or post-micturition dribble, happens when urine left in the urethra leaks out after you have finished. It is common, especially with age, and often improves with a simple “milking” technique and pelvic floor exercises.

What is after-dribble?

After-dribble is when a small amount of urine leaks out a minute or two after you have finished urinating and zipped up, often leaving a damp patch on your underwear or trousers. It is very common in men, particularly from middle age onwards. It is usually harmless but can be embarrassing and affect confidence.

Why it happens

The urethra, the tube that carries urine through the penis, has a U-shaped bend under the scrotum. Normally the muscles of the pelvic floor squeeze this section empty at the end of urination. If these muscles are weaker, a small pool of urine stays behind and leaks out later.

Common causes include:

  • Weaker pelvic floor muscles, which can come with age, weight gain, a lot of sitting or straining.
  • An enlarged prostate, which can slow the flow and leave urine behind.
  • Rushing, such as finishing quickly at work or in a public toilet.
  • Tight clothing that presses on the urethra.

Simple techniques that help

The urethral “milking” technique

After you finish urinating, before you zip up:

  • Place two fingers behind your scrotum, on the area between the scrotum and anus.
  • Press gently upwards and forwards, sliding your fingers towards the base of the penis.
  • Repeat once or twice, then gently shake.

This pushes trapped urine forward so it comes out while you are still at the toilet. NHS pelvic health services commonly recommend this approach.

Pelvic floor exercises

Pelvic floor exercises strengthen the muscles that empty the urethra and also support erections and ejaculation control.

  • Find the muscles by imagining you are stopping yourself passing wind and stopping the flow of urine at the same time. Do not practise by stopping your urine regularly.
  • Squeeze and lift for up to 10 seconds, then relax fully for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat up to 10 times, three times a day, lying, sitting and standing.
  • After urinating, give one strong squeeze to help empty the urethra.

Most men notice improvement after several weeks of regular practice. Our guide to premature ejaculation exercises explains pelvic floor training in more detail.

Take your time

Wait a few seconds longer before you finish, and avoid pushing or straining.

Other practical tips

  • Wear supportive but not tight underwear.
  • Keep to a healthy weight to reduce pressure on the pelvic floor.
  • Cut back on caffeine and fizzy drinks if they make you urinate more often.

When to see a professional

After-dribble on its own is usually not serious. See an appropriately registered medical professional if you also have:

  • A weak or slow stream, straining, or feeling that your bladder does not empty
  • Needing to urinate often, urgently or at night
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Blood in your urine or semen
  • Leaking at other times, such as when you cough or lift

These can be signs of prostate enlargement, infection or other problems that need assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I dribble after I pee?

Usually because a little urine stays in the bend of the urethra under the scrotum and leaks out later. Weaker pelvic floor muscles and prostate enlargement are common causes.

How do I stop dribbling after urinating?

Use the urethral milking technique before zipping up and do pelvic floor exercises daily. Most men improve within weeks.

Is after-dribble a sign of prostate problems?

It can be, especially with a weak stream, frequent urination or waking at night to urinate. Get these checked by a medical professional.

Do pelvic floor exercises help men?

Yes. They can reduce after-dribble and also support erections and ejaculation control.

When should I worry about dribbling?

See a medical professional if you also have pain, burning, blood in your urine, a weak stream or leaking at other times.

How much does a consultation cost?

A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
