Hair Loss Tablets and Erectile Dysfunction: What Men Should Know
Can hair loss tablets like finasteride cause erectile dysfunction or low libido? Learn what research shows and how to talk to your prescriber.
In short: Hair loss tablets and erectile dysfunction are linked in a minority of men. Finasteride and dutasteride lower DHT, a hormone made from testosterone, and some men notice lower libido, softer erections or less semen. Speak to your prescriber before making any change.
Why men take hair loss tablets
Male pattern hair loss is extremely common. Tablets such as finasteride (and sometimes dutasteride) slow hair loss by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the hormone that shrinks hair follicles in men who are prone to balding. The same medicines are also used at different doses for an enlarged prostate.
Which sexual effects have been reported?
In clinical studies, a small percentage of men taking finasteride reported:
- Lower libido
- Erection difficulties
- Reduced semen volume
- Changes in orgasm
For most men who notice these effects, they ease after stopping the medicine. A small number of men report symptoms that continue after stopping, sometimes called post-finasteride syndrome. Research into this is ongoing.
How common is it?
Most men who take finasteride do not experience sexual side effects. Studies have found rates of a few percent, and some of the effects reported also occur in men given placebo tablets. Worry about side effects can itself affect sexual function, which makes it complex to measure.
Could something else be the cause?
Hair loss often starts in the same years that other changes appear – work stress, weight gain, less sleep, low testosterone or rising blood pressure. Before blaming the tablet, it helps to look at the whole picture. Read all of a sudden erectile dysfunction for other common triggers.
Topical treatments
Some men switch to topical options such as minoxidil, which works differently and does not lower DHT. Your prescriber or pharmacist can explain the options.
Important: talk to your prescriber
Do not stop or start hair loss medicine without advice. If you notice sexual changes, tell the professional who prescribed it. They can review the dose, discuss alternatives, and decide whether further tests are needed.
Natural steps to support sexual health
Whatever the cause, these habits support erections and libido:
- Regular exercise and strength training
- Seven to nine hours of sleep – see testosterone and sleep
- A heart-healthy diet and less alcohol
- Not smoking or vaping
- Stress management and open conversation with your partner
Testosterone and hair loss myths
Many men believe that high testosterone causes baldness or that losing hair means low testosterone. Neither is quite right – genetics and follicle sensitivity to DHT matter most. See testosterone and hair loss.

Frequently asked questions
Can finasteride cause erectile dysfunction?
A small percentage of men taking finasteride report erection difficulties, lower libido or reduced semen. Most men do not experience these effects.
Do finasteride sexual side effects go away?
For most men who notice them, the effects ease after stopping the medicine. A small number report ongoing symptoms, which is still being studied.
Does minoxidil cause erectile dysfunction?
Topical minoxidil works differently from finasteride and does not lower DHT. Sexual side effects are not commonly linked to it, but discuss any concerns with your pharmacist.
Should I stop my hair loss tablets if I have ED?
Speak to your prescriber before stopping. Other causes such as stress, sleep or blood pressure should also be considered.
Does hair loss mean low testosterone?
No. Male pattern hair loss is mainly due to genetics and follicle sensitivity to DHT, not low testosterone.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
