Semen smell: what is normal and what is not
Semen has a natural scent that varies between men. A sudden change in semen smell is usually harmless, but sometimes it points to an infection.
In short: Normal semen often smells slightly like chlorine or bleach because of its alkaline compounds. Diet, alcohol, dehydration and hygiene can change the scent. A strong fishy, foul or rotten smell, especially with discharge, pain, burning or a change in colour, may signal an infection and should be checked.
Why semen smells the way it does
Semen is slightly alkaline and contains zinc, enzymes and other compounds that give it a mild chlorine-like scent.
Harmless reasons for changes
- Strong foods such as garlic, onion, asparagus or spices
- Alcohol and coffee
- Dehydration, which concentrates semen
- Mixing with urine or sweat
Signs of a possible infection
- Fishy or foul smell
- Yellow or green colour, see sperm colour meaning
- Discharge from the penis between ejaculations
- Burning when urinating
- Pain in the pelvis or testicles
These may point to prostatitis, a urinary tract infection or an STI. See STI symptoms in men and UTI in men.
Simple steps
- Drink plenty of water
- Wash daily and after sex, see penile hygiene tips
- Eat a varied diet with fruit and vegetables
