White spots on the penis: what they usually are
Noticing white spots on the penis can be alarming, but most causes are harmless and very common. Here is how to tell the difference and when to get checked.
In short: Common harmless causes of white spots on the penis include Fordyce spots (visible oil glands), pearly penile papules, ingrown hairs and pimples. Thrush can cause white patches with itching. Less commonly, spots can be genital warts, molluscum contagiosum or signs of skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus. Do not squeeze them, and get any changing, painful or spreading spots checked.
Harmless causes
Fordyce spots
Tiny, painless white or yellow dots on the shaft or scrotum. They are visible oil glands, present in most adults, and are not infectious.
Pearly penile papules
Small, dome-shaped bumps in rows around the rim of the head of the penis. They are normal and not an STI. See pearly penile papules.
Pimples and ingrown hairs
Blocked hair follicles at the base of the penis or on the pubic area, especially after shaving.
Causes that need treatment
Thrush
White patches or a white coating with itching, redness and soreness, often under the foreskin.
Molluscum contagiosum
Small, firm, pearly bumps with a dimple in the centre. Caused by a virus and can spread through skin contact.
Genital warts
Small, flesh-coloured or white growths, sometimes in clusters. Caused by HPV.
Lichen sclerosus
White, shiny, thin patches on the foreskin or head of the penis that may tighten the foreskin. Needs medical assessment.
