Yohimbe for erectile dysfunction: benefits and serious safety warnings
Yohimbe comes from the bark of a West and Central African tree and is a common ingredient in “male enhancement” products. Before considering yohimbe for erectile dysfunction, it is important to understand the risks.
In short: Yohimbine, the main compound in yohimbe bark, showed modest benefits over placebo for erectile dysfunction in older studies. However, yohimbe can cause anxiety, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure and dangerous interactions. Supplements often contain inaccurate amounts. Because of these risks, yohimbe is not recommended without professional supervision.
What is yohimbe?
Yohimbe (Pausinystalia johimbe) is a tree native to West and Central Africa. Its bark contains yohimbine, which blocks alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and increases adrenaline-like activity.
What research shows
- Older studies and reviews found yohimbine produced modest improvement in erectile function compared with placebo, mainly in men without a clear physical cause.
- Effects are weaker and less reliable than modern treatments.
- Many yohimbe bark supplements contain much less or much more yohimbine than labelled.
Serious safety concerns
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety, panic attacks and agitation
- Headache, sweating and insomnia
- Rare reports of heart attacks and seizures with high doses
- Dangerous interactions with antidepressants (especially MAOIs), stimulants, blood pressure medicines and caffeine
Men with heart disease, high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, kidney or liver disease should avoid yohimbe.
Product warnings
Yohimbe is a common ingredient in unregistered sex pills and pre-workout products. Some have been found to contain hidden prescription drugs. See sex pills.
Safer natural options
- Exercise, weight loss, no smoking and less alcohol have the strongest evidence. See home remedies for erectile dysfunction.
- Korean red ginseng and L-arginine have better safety profiles. See ginseng for erectile dysfunction and L-arginine for erectile dysfunction.
- Pelvic floor exercises. See Kegel exercises for men.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
