Jelly-like clumps in semen: what they mean
Noticing jelly-like clumps in semen can be worrying. In most cases it is completely normal and related to how semen thickens and then liquefies.
In short: Semen naturally coagulates into a thick, jelly-like consistency right after ejaculation, then becomes more liquid within 15 to 30 minutes. Clumps are more common after a long gap between ejaculations, with dehydration or after heavy exercise. Persistent changes, blood, a strong smell, pain or fertility concerns are worth checking.
Why semen thickens
Semen contains proteins from the seminal vesicles that cause it to clot briefly after ejaculation. Enzymes from the prostate then break it down so sperm can swim.
Common reasons for clumps
- A long gap since the last ejaculation
- Dehydration, see can dehydration cause erectile dysfunction
- Hot weather or heavy exercise
- Natural variation from day to day
When to get checked
- Clumps that never liquefy
- Blood in semen, see blood in semen
- Yellow or green colour with a strong smell, see sperm colour meaning
- Pain during ejaculation, see painful ejaculation causes
- Trying to conceive for a year without success
Does it affect fertility?
Occasional clumps do not. Semen that stays very thick for a long time may make it harder for sperm to move, which a semen analysis can assess.
Simple steps
- Drink enough water
- Ejaculate regularly
- Eat a varied diet with fruit, vegetables and zinc-rich foods
