Peeling skin on the penis: common causes and gentle care
Peeling skin on the penis is common and usually caused by friction, dryness or irritation. Sometimes it points to an infection that needs treatment.
In short: The most common causes of peeling penile skin are friction from sex or masturbation, dry skin from harsh soaps, allergic reactions to latex or lubricants, thrush, balanitis, eczema and psoriasis. Gentle washing with water, a fragrance-free moisturiser, a break from friction and switching products usually help. Get checked for sores, discharge, severe pain or peeling that does not settle within two weeks.
Common causes
Friction
Vigorous or dry sex or masturbation can cause small tears and peeling. Use lubricant and give the skin a few days to heal.
Dry skin
Strong soaps, shower gels and hot water strip natural oils.
Allergic or irritant reactions
Latex condoms, spermicides, scented lubricants and washing powders can cause redness, itching and peeling.
Thrush
A yeast infection causing itching, redness, white patches and peeling, often under the foreskin. More common in men with diabetes.
Balanitis
Inflammation of the head of the penis. See balanitis.
Eczema and psoriasis
These skin conditions can affect the genitals.
Sexually transmitted infections
Herpes can start with tingling and small blisters that then break and peel. See STI symptoms in men.
