Hormones
Testosterone and hair loss: does high testosterone make you bald?
Many men believe that losing hair means they have high testosterone, or that boosting testosterone will make them bald. The truth about testosterone and hair loss is more about genes than hormone levels.
In short: Male pattern baldness is driven mainly by genetics and the sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT, a hormone made from testosterone. Bald men do not necessarily have higher testosterone. Anabolic steroids and testosterone products can speed up hair loss in men who are genetically prone. Masturbation does not cause hair loss.
How hair loss works
Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. In men with a genetic tendency, scalp hair follicles are sensitive to DHT, which gradually shrinks them, producing thinner hair until follicles stop growing hair.
Does high testosterone cause baldness?
Not directly. Studies have not found that bald men have consistently higher testosterone. The key factor is how sensitive your follicles are to DHT, which is mostly inherited.
What can speed up hair loss
- Anabolic steroids and testosterone products: they raise DHT and can accelerate loss in prone men. See steroids and erectile dysfunction.
- Genetics: family history on both sides matters.
- Age: most men have some hair loss by middle age.
Common myths
- “Masturbation causes hair loss.” There is no evidence. See does masturbation lower testosterone.
- “Wearing caps causes baldness.” No.
- “Bald men are more virile.” Hair loss reflects follicle sensitivity, not higher testosterone or sexual ability.
Other causes of hair loss
Not all hair loss is male pattern baldness. Stress, illness, thyroid problems, iron deficiency, crash dieting and some medicines can cause sudden or patchy loss. These need assessment.
Natural support for healthy hair
- Eat enough protein, iron, zinc and vitamin D. See zinc benefits for men sexually.
- Manage stress and sleep well.
- Avoid smoking, which is linked with earlier hair loss.
- Saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil have small studies for hair loss, with limited evidence. See saw palmetto benefits for men.
Hair loss medicines and sexual side effects
Medicines that block DHT, such as finasteride, can affect libido and erections in some men. Discuss this with your prescriber. See medications that cause erectile dysfunction.
