Thrush in Men: Penile Yeast Infection Symptoms and Relief
Thrush in men causes itching, redness and white discharge under the foreskin. Learn the causes, natural self-care, when to get checked and prevention.
In short: Thrush in men is a yeast infection, usually caused by *Candida*, that leads to itching, redness, soreness and a white, lumpy discharge under the foreskin. It is common, not usually serious and often linked to moisture, diabetes or antibiotics.
What is thrush?
Thrush is an overgrowth of *Candida* yeast, which normally lives harmlessly on the skin. When conditions are warm and moist, it can multiply and cause inflammation of the head of the penis (balanitis). Read more in balanitis: red penis head.
Symptoms
- Itching, burning or irritation on the head of the penis
- Redness or small red spots
- A white, lumpy discharge under the foreskin
- An unpleasant smell
- Tight foreskin or difficulty pulling it back
- Discomfort when passing urine or during sex
Causes and risk factors
- Uncircumcised penis with moisture trapped under the foreskin
- Diabetes, especially if blood sugar is high – recurring thrush can be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes
- Recent antibiotics, which upset normal skin bacteria
- Weakened immunity, such as with HIV
- Harsh soaps, shower gels and perfumed products
- Sex with a partner who has thrush
Thrush is not classed as an STI, but it can pass between partners.
Natural self-care
- Wash gently once a day with warm water; pull back the foreskin and dry thoroughly.
- Avoid perfumed soaps and shower gels on the genitals.
- Wear loose cotton underwear and change after exercise.
- Avoid sex until symptoms clear, or use condoms.
- Manage blood sugar if you have diabetes.
See penile hygiene tips for more.
Treatment
Antifungal creams from a pharmacy often clear thrush within one to two weeks. A pharmacist can advise. If it keeps coming back, both you and your partner may need treatment.
When to see someone
See an appropriately registered medical professional if:
- Symptoms don’t improve after a week of treatment
- Thrush keeps coming back
- You have sores, blisters or a discharge that is yellow or green
- You can’t pull back your foreskin – see phimosis
- You have diabetes or a weakened immune system
Recurrent thrush is a reason to check blood sugar.
